Writing a Book Is the Perfect Business Strategy

A small business owner doesn't have the budget of a big company, and doesn't need it. They have something big companies don't: a direct relationship with the buyer. A book is the cheapest way to make that visible to people who don't know them yet.

Why it's right for you

The book is the small business's strategy

You're not a big company, and you don't have the resources for a major advertising campaign. Your resources are limited, so they need to go where they pay off most.

What can you offer that a big company can't? Direct communication, the reliability of someone who answers in person, real specialisation. Big companies are perceived as distant and generalist — and in most cases they are.

On cost

Publishing a book costs less than the word "book" makes you think, and it's a one-time expense for an object that lasts for years.

The 2021 version of this article added that "average returns far exceed the costs". That's not a figure we can prove, so it's been cut: only numbers with their own window and method go on this site.

The part that stops everyone

Not how you write, but what you write

No one expects the next great Italian novel. The book expected from someone in your line of work has a different purpose, and a different purpose changes all the rules.

You're not interested in critical acclaim, mass-market reception, or style. Your book speaks to your specific audience, and it's written for one thing only: to show that you're the most capable person to solve the problem that audience has.

Whether you're a restaurateur, a real-estate agent, or the owner of a young company, you have something to say: your experience, and the advice you'd give on the subject you're qualified in. Focus on the what, and the how stops being an obstacle.

One word at a time

Getting known and getting introduced are two different channels

The book works on the first. The second has to be built separately, and for a small business it's the one that produces customers first.

The reputation channel

It takes years, doesn't wear out, and doesn't depend on anyone. It's the one the book acts on, and it's why the effort is worth it.

The referrals channel

It starts from relationships that already exist — customers, suppliers, collaborators — and produces results far sooner. In the discipline that asset is called relational capital, and almost every company has it without ever having counted it.

Whoever opens those doors is a Connector, and they put themselves on the line every time they do it (Sixth Law). The book makes it more likely they'll agree to do it; it doesn't replace it.

The book works for years. Referrals work starting Monday.

The first step

Where your company stands, in one number

AIRA-SCAN© measures the relational capital your company already has: ten questions, three minutes, no registration. Your browser calculates the score and shows it immediately, along with the areas where you're losing the most points.

The extended report then arrives by email, and within one working day a person calls you: you look at the result together and assess whether the AIRA-DX© Stoic Analysis makes sense for your company. It's free and limited to twelve a week, so it isn't owed to anyone who does the check-up: it's decided together.

Would you rather just talk about it? The number is 0549 888808.
